Silk and Satin: Anna Popovich presents first ready-to-wear collection

Anna Popovich London Fashion Week show
Anna Popovich autumn/winter 12

An underground room just off an alley plastered with graffiti saw the setting for Anna Popovich’s first ready-to-wear show. In a dimly lit bar the TellusFashion designer presented pieces so beautiful they added life and light to such a contrasting setting.

Ruffles, pleats and gatherings of fabric, a Popovich trademark, were as evident as ever and slinked down tight-fitting cocktail gowns and sat on the shoulders of halter neck mini dresses. Colours were kept simple and stylish with deep golds and silvers highlighted with vibrant reds and subtle blues. Brogues and peep toe wedges, in the same gentle grey, toned down the outfits and proved the wearability of the pieces.  Her time interning at Roksanda Ilincic has clearly influenced her.

Long gold zips and rows of glimmering buttons in the same shiny gold fell down the front of floor length dresses and added a wider silhouette to a camel overcoat. Mini dresses were a mix of silk-satin and raw silk with clinched in waists following on to full-layered skirts. Tight sleeves filled out into gathered cuffs held back with buttons.

The gently flowing dresses featured scoop backs and gathered fronts and attention was paid to the layering of fabric on skirts and below the knee length coats. The show featured a number of more glamorous dresses, sweeping the floor and hugging the model’s thighs as they snaked up the catwalk with oversized gold bows fastening the backs.

A more daytime look came in the form of a gold silk-satin shirt dress which had oversized lapels and was shown to the audience again when the designer herself wore a black version in the finale.

The east London feel of the venue could not have acted as such a fantastic opposite to the collection shown and the designs we saw were proof that Anna Popovich most definitely perfected the art of simple streamlining and created designs to enhance the beauty of the female silhouette.
