CELEBRITY STYLE

You Can't Stop Looking At Me!

Last night saw the Brits invade the O2 Arena in style, and TellusFashion's desk was brimming with photos of stunning celebs strutting their stuff along the red carpet. But the ultimate style queen of the evening, and defiiate winner of the Jessie J look-a-like competition, goes to X Factor fire cracker Cher Lloyd.

Perhaps the Cheryl Cole comparisons got too much for the fiesty teen, but whatever fashion pill she's taking we'll have double the dose, as little Cher looks positively stunning in this sequin purple cat suit, topped off with killer Christian Louboutin Asteroid Spike heels.

Ms Lloyd has gone from rough to buff in terms of the fashion stakes, and THIS fash-tasphroe is all but a distant memory; taking TellusFashion back to the days of teenage kicks and attacking our own jeans with scissors and safety pins.

Mini Cheryl may have taken inspiration from her former mentor, but she has taken a confident leap and is clearly experimenting with every aspect of her image. Hats off to you young Lloyd; TellusFashion hearts your style swagger, and we hope to see more of this blossoming young beaut in 2012.

Keep your eyes peeled for a full fashion run down of The Brits later today, with TellusFashion handing out awards for Best Dressed UK & International Female, Fashion New comer, and WTF Were you thinking?!

Angel on Earth

The passing of the indisputably glorious Whitney Houston yesterday plunged the musical world into deep despair.  Irreprochably beautiful; she possessed a certain pizzazz and fire within her soul that lit her up in a way that no amount of diamonds could (and back in the nineties, they used to hang them on like a chandeliar at Buckingham Palace). Her voice was pure and sweet, untainted by her difficult childhood, and yet it radiated with a strength that reflected the woman that she was. She was a diva, not by the stereotypical Hollywood definition of a high profile starlet who makes unjustified requests, but because of the way she was - regal, queenly, angelic. There was none, and can never again be one like her. She was unrivalled, incomparable, irreplacable.

The blessing of photographs lie in their ability to - in the words of Abba, 'freeze the picture, and save it from the funny tricks of time'. For a person of Whitney's calibre, whose long struggle with internal demons (prompting an uncontrollable spiral into a life of hard drugs) became as much a public concern as it was a highly personal matter, and who had to face having every aspect of her arduous journey documented for vulturic (public) consumption, we can be thankful for the photographs that immortalised Whitney at her prime, doing justice to her memory even when the subsequent news of her descent from glory failed.

And here she is, in what is easily one of my favourite photographs of Whitney, striking in a gorgeous polka-dot bow-dress (a design that is, coincidentally, coming back into style), grooving as she does what she does best. Her ebony skin gleams in the spotlight, her pearly white teeth are exposed in a genuine care free laugh, and even with minimal jewellery, she is effortlessly beautiful in a way that needs no artificial adornment.

Proving that a true beauty needs to be a chameleon, here she is a disco diva in a sequinned dress with a blazer jacket. The dazzling quality of her outfit does not detract from the raw passion on her face as she belts out one of her classics. Her cheeks are flushed - and even in her grimace as she powers through the high notes, there is an element of a smile behind her expression. She is in her element.

Forget the likes of Kim Kardashian and Maria Fowler. When you have a talent such as hers, there is no need to flaunt your body in exchange for fame, but with a body like Whitney's, it certainly didn't hurt to show some flesh. Here she oozes sex appeal in a studded mini dress and a Cleopatra-inspired hairstyle.

Performing at a pre-Grammy party exactly one year ago, Whitney shows the world that the new generation of wannabe soul divas still have nothing on her. Although animal print has been coming back in style over the last few years, Whitney wears her safari inspired ensemble and pulls it off the way a true diva knows how - as if it never went out of style in the first place.

Proving that the years of turmoil have not taken a toll on her, Whitney looked positively resplendent in a grecian inspired assymetrical sheath dress on the night of what should have been the beginning of her ultimate comeback. At 47, she cut a flawless figure, putting most women half her age in similiar body-hugging gowns to shame.

Reminding us why, despite her long years of absence from the music industry, she still reigned as diva supreme.
Oozing sensuality in a dress that flows and clings to all the right places, Whitney proves that balance is always key to staying on the right side of the line by flashing only a few choice areas of her body: her long slender neck and decolletage (a highly overlooked region of the female body), her cleavage, and of course - the crucial element that no self-respecting old school diva could do without: the dramatic slit up one thigh.

With the face of an angel and the voice of one, her time on earth was ended much too soon - her life had ended before it had truly begun. In the immortal words of The Eagles, she was 'too fast to live, and too fast to die' - with her unresolved issues from her childhood, her god-given beauty, raw talent, female prowess and the unstoppable fame and fortune that ensued, she never really had a chance. And yet despite it all - she held her head like a queen and carried on. She never gave up and she never stopped to take pity on herself - forever gracious, eternally beautiful, her strength of character lives on in the legacy of her music. Rest in peace Whitney Houston, you will be forever missed.

amFAR Gala...Who Wore What?

It was the night before NY Fashion Week, and the frosty conditions that settled across the Big Apple didn’t stop our lovely generous celebs getting there glad rags on to support a good cause. The annual amfAR Gala that saw a stream of A-Listers braving the icy conditions to help raise money for AIDS research and prevention was hosted by none other than Sarah Jessica Parker. With fashion week looming let’s have a look at what they were all wearing...

Sarah Jessica Parker chose to dress down her girly Oscar de la Renta frock with a biker jacket and some very strange looking Michael Jackson gloves. Don’t think Carrie would be too impressed with this one SJP!

The ever Shrinking Alexa Chung can do no wrong in my eyes. Always front row at any major fashion event, she nails effortless elegance constantly. High shine fabrics were huge on the runway last Fashion Week and here we see Alexa teaming her cute shine blouse with a detailed mid length skirt. A splash of colour from a quirky bag creates a look that is bang on trend for the spring summer season.

Supermodel Erin Heatherton looked gorgeous in this strapless monotone gown, finishing the look with tussled hair and natural makeup.

Gossip Girls Leighton Meester looked stunning dressed head to toe in Louis Vuitton, Jazzing up the traditional LBD with Fur Panels and a plunging neckline.

There’s always one major wardrobe malfunction at these events and this time it was Lindsay Lohan. The 25 year old looked well beyond her years caked in makeup and wearing this frumpy below the knee white dress. Her dodgy hair and even dodgier lips was the only thing that was able to detract onlooker’s attention from this hideous outfit.

Ones to watch

The fashion calendar is pretty full on. With no such thing as ‘fashion bank holidays’ for us to recharge our style batteries it’s sometimes hard to keep up, let alone keep an eye out for the next fashionista. What with award season dresses to keep up with, Rhianna and Katy Perrys continually changing hair colours and all the epic golden couple breakdowns of 2012. We almost let two of the hottest new style icons slip under our radar. But never fear, TellusFashion have running in heels down to a tee and reporting on celeb fashion news is in our nature.

The newest girls to hit the style hall of fame are two brits no less: Lily Collins and Felicity Jones.

Collins is another celebrity offspring with her father being none other than Genesis singer Phil Collins. Luckily for Lily she is more blessed in the follicle department- in fact many have commented on her full eyebrows (very scouse brow). And although Lily may not be a dab hand on the drums like her Dad, she appears to be making a name for herself all on her own as a credible actress and ‘It’ girl. Most recently linked to Zac Efron no less- JEL!

Collins has admitted that her “last name may have opened doors” but remains feisty stating “but I have to keep those doors open”. It is this attitude which is sure to get her far, and seems to translate to her edgy style.

Lily Collins works relaxed layered daytime looks, often seen wearing a staple blazer. Lily knows that the red carpet is about taking it up a notch and seems to be quite a character dresser. She’s not afraid of really committing to a look and going all out with striking cuts and bright colours. She’s a fashion chameleon and is definitely someone exciting to watch this year.

Felicity Jones is another British actress, who stars in the seriously tear-jerking Indie flick Like Crazy (no really- I bawled like a baby, and I’ve been told I am emotionally dead at times).

She’s set to be the next big thing, and you don’t need to probe to see why. As well as being an incredible actress she is unmistakably gorgeous- the new face of D&G- and is making a name for herself in the fashion stakes.

With her laid-back style with ladylike red carpet choices she often opts for polished knee length tea frocks. Commenting recently Felicity stated “Fashion choices are never arbitrary, even if you say you don’t care. that’s a decision. There’s something you’re trying to say.” So lets see what Felicity Jones is planning on saying and keep an eye open for her cropping up on best dressed lists and various magazine covers in the coming months.

The All-American Girl

Sprouting out like wild mushroom after the rain, seemingly coming out of nowhere and seemingly going everywhere, Lana Del Rey, with her throaty voice, porcelain skin, sultry doe eyes and perpetually pouting lips, is the woman of the moment. Her title was cinched and the extent of her fame blown up to unprecedented proportions when Vogue made the move of featuring her, a virtual unknown and newcomer, on the cover of their March issue. The harsh reviews by her critics served only as a catalyst to her overnight celebrity, perpetuating the girl from the shadows into sudden limelight. But Lana, otherwise known by her birth name, Elizabeth Grant, is poised and mature beyond her years. With wisdom-filled eyes to match her soulful voice, and good looks to rival her model counterparts, the 'self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra' is a candy with a surprise centre. Her striking features, making her look like a hybrid between a 1950's housewife of the all-american dream, a retro pin-up girl and an urban sweet-faced beauty, belie the deep voice and the strength that lie within. You never quite know what you might find with this girl - what you see is not what you get.

Even her fashion choices are indicative of the treacherous waters that bubble beneath the surface.

Here she is, looking like a poster girl from the early 1900's advocating domestic appeal. She is the quintessential housewive, her chestnut-auburn hair is glossy and falls in pin-up waves past slender shoulders, her delicate skin is unfreckled and she pulls off coral lipstick the way only a red-head can. Her blouse, buttoned all the way up her neck, with its peter pan collar, is ladylike and innocent. She is rich as cream, the girl that the soldiers from bygone wars would look forward to, the girl of their dreams - greeting them with a smile as they stepped fresh off the plane onto the tarmac, smelling of cookie dough and bringing with her the comfort of home, a safe haven from the brewing wars in the outside world. And yet, underneath her top, she has added a subtle feature - a feature so subtle you could easily overlook, but once seen cannot be unseen: a red bra, reflecting a racier nature.

Here her rebellious streak is out in full force. Exposing her pale midriff in a ripped up t-shirt and lightwashed jeans, Lana accessorises with mismatched jewellery (Chanel earrings, a religious necklace and a chunky statement necklace and ring) and a classily held cigarette, and adopts a distinctly 'gangsta' pose, paying homage to her turbulent nature. Her gaze is challenging, almost sinister; and yet her makeup is impeccable, her skin dewy, her hair perfectly coiffed. She is a walking fashion contradiction - so wrong, and yet so right.

Here she is at the Late Night With David Letterman show, looking prim, proper, and as sweet as honey, a vision in an all-white assemble surely more suited to church or brunch with her in-laws? Her structured, long sleeved ladylike dress is complemented by nude pumps, and she keeps her accessories to a minimal. She is positively angellic, keeping the lid on her wild side firmly intact. If it wasn't for her fiery hair, one would be forgiven for mistaking her for Kate Middleton. She is turbulent, experimental, unpredictable, controversial, a regular chameleon - she is the perfect fashion muse. Already she is creating buzz in the fashion world, having recently been signed by Next Model Management.

Bearing in mind the fickle nature of fame (remember Rebecca Black? where is she now?), and the enormity of her star proportions at the moment, it seemed like a crime not to dedicate an entire post to her. I for one, think that we have not heard the last of Lana Del Rey. Watch this space.

Fashionably Bad, But Perfectly Good At It?

Rihanna has always pushed the boundaries of fashion, but lately she has been hitting the headlines with a look which reminds TellusFashion of that moment Julia Roberts dons her blonde wig and hits Hollywood Boulevard in Pretty Woman. But is Rihanna's trashy fashion merely a transition period; she is only 23 years old after all, and we all have to hit a few fash disasters before we find our stride.

She may of found love in a hopeless place, but TellUsFashions heart is definately not skipping a beat when seeing these ensembles.

Double Denim Disaster

See Through & Sweat Patches

Billie Jean, But We're Not Too Keen...

We all know that RiRi's style changes faster than she gets a new tattoo, but lately she has fallen off the fashion radar, and we at TellUsFashion have put together a few outfits from our very own designers to have her looking like the most fashionable girl in the world once more.

Adofho Sanchez ONDI Dress £103

Ri-ri is a fan of flashing the flesh, and this stunning creation allows her to display her curves while still adding a dash of style.

Dominque Kral £300

Our good girl gone bad loves to stand out from the crowd, and this emerald green stand out dress would put her straight back on the fashion map where she belongs.

Nico Didonna Faux Fur Coat £360

Teaming this with her favourite umbrella-ella-ella would keep Rihanna well covered from the storm of critics (including us!)

A Cut Above The Rest...

Summer may be a distant dream right now, but it gives TellusFashion plenty of time to hone and tone our post January bodies and buy this risque Oye Swimwear.

The Magic of Optical Illusion

Women across the world will stop at nothing to achieve the perfect silhouette, from nip and tucks to ugly pull in pants we are constantly striving for perfection. But now thanks to a number of talented designers we can have the ultimate hour glass figure without so much as joining the gym or depriving yourself of that galaxy bar. Now I know you’re sitting there thinking, how on earth can such a magical dress exist...well it does and the celebs are loving the genius optical illusion dresses.

Kate Winslet made a triumphant appearance at the Venice Film Festival last year in this optical illusion Stella McCarthy dress. The black panelling down the side creates an hour glass figure in the blink of an eye.

Liv Tyler wore another one of Stella McCarthy’s clever creations, nailing the colour blocking trend at the same time.

A lady who needs no help creating curves is Kim Kardashian. The voluptuous reality star wore this black and white moiré print dress by Alexander McQueen that creates the illusion of a tiny waist. However, showing it can work in both ways Victoria Beckham wore the exact same dress to give her slender frame more curves, demonstrating these dresses are perfect for any shape and size.

Never one to make the most of her womanly figure, star of TOWIE Jessica Wright stepped out looking amazing in this optical illusion dress for a few drinks with her co-stars.

Showing us that illusion dresses don’t have to be overly dramatic, Whitney port wore this asymmetric mini dress with a strip of purple fabric across the waist making it look even smaller than it already is.

Wondering where you can bag yourselves one of these magical dresses? Look no further than the great British High Street...

City Girl.

A lady who needs no introduction and who is never far away from the front row of fashion shows is Miss Olivia Palermo. Best known for her stint on MTV’s ‘The City’, we were constantly drawn back in to see the cat fights and never ending drama between Olivia and co-star Whitney Port. Though her acting days may be over she promises her off screen antics to not be as villainous as ‘The City’ made out. Lavished in luxury Olivia is living the real Blair Waldorf lifestyle, coming from the upper east side and and ‘budget’ not a word in her vocabulary, the girl is living in a world us readers could only dream of. So it comes as no surprise girls across the globe are gripped on what outfit and more importantly what accessories Olivia will step out in next. Having worked in the Elle magazine accessory department it would be disappointing to say the least if Olivia wasn’t hitting the mark when it comes to accessorizing her ever glamourous outfits but no fear as Olivia always as we know, comes off winning.

The Blazer - Burberry Prorsum Tuxedo Jacket seen throughout.

A signature classic throws an ‘edge‘ to even the prettiest of outfits. Olivia claims “Blazers are like men” and perhaps this is why she is so selective to her purchases.

The Party Dress -
When Olivia turns up to the party there is two things you can guarantee;
1. It will be the ‘IT’ party of the town that everybody is just dying to get into.
2. The dress will be full of texture.
With endless industry contacts the socialite always has her style down to  a t when dressing for any party or event as you can be sure the outfit will be front page news the following day.

Groundhog Day...

Ever since Angelina Jolie turned up to a premiere with a vial of BIlly Bob Thornton’s blood around her neck back in 1998 I had her down as a bit kooky. Ok thats putting it lightly, I admit to thinking she was kind of mental- blood in my book should always be kept inside the body and never, no matter how ‘in’ gothic is, worn as an accessory.

Following the whole Mr and Mrs Smith fiasco, I was also very much team Aniston. Yes I get it, Jolie is incredibly hot and sexy and Aniston is a more timid girl-next-door type. But I bet Jennifer would wake you up with a bacon sandwich, a glass of fresh orange, and a cuddle. Whilst I’m not even sure Jolie sleeps in a bed. I wouldn’t be surprised if she slept upside down, in coffin, adorned with bats. Yes she’s phenomenally good looking, but the woman also scares the hell out of me.

So for a starlet with a bit of a reputation for being a quirky one woman force, able to get exactly what she wants at whatever cost. She disappoints on a grand scale when it comes to her fashion picks. Yesterday the Screen Guild Awards saw Angelina take to the red carpet in, shock horror, a black gown.

Angelina opted for a slinky draped Jenny Packham dress. We’ve established the woman is a (scary) goddess, but the gown was reminiscent of someone trying to do the whole cool recycling thing, and hoping to make bin bags look like couture. I have no doubt that Jolie will top ‘best dressed lists’ she always does. But why?!  This a woman who gets by with her face alone, she is not a style star but consistently finds herself in this category.

Just take a look at Exhibit A:

(images courtesy of glamour.com, stylezip.com and now.com)

Jolie is a repeat offender of opting for a black dress for the red carpet, don’t get me wrong I love black dresses as much as the next girl, but I find it a little lacklustre for the red carpet. Her black gown is old news and she truly needs to inject some of her edge into her outfits to avoid the snore factor.

Enough Jolie bashing for one day, I’ve picked my best dressed girls from the Screen Actor Guild Awards and it seems I’m continuing my sordid affair with Tilda Swinton (I know what has got into me?!). Swinton really knows hows to dress her lean frame and is never boring in her fashion choices. Kelly Osbourne, who seems to be onto a winning streak with fashion hits of recent, looked beautiful in a white Badgley Muschka gown clinched in at her shrinking waist. The Glee girls also deserve a fashion nod for their picks, opting for colour and glamour- take note Jolie!

The Bigger The Beehive

2011 bought us many memorable dates but one of the most googled was July 23rd, this was the date that took the nation to a standstill. Its the tragic date that claimed our beloved Amy Winehouse, leaving a huge hole in our hearts and the industry, we have hungrily been awaiting to see what those who have vowed to pay homage to her name will bring. A name constantly rolling off even the elitist in the fashion industry, as proved when Karl Largerfeld honored her dramatic eyes and the tallest of the tall beehives on his models during his 2007 London Chanel pre-fall show. Perhaps one of the most unexpected and headline hitting homages took form at Jean Paul Gaultier 2012 Couture show, the designer best known for Madonnas conical bra circa 1990s’ ‘The Blonde Ambition Tour’ stepped away from the princess of pop and took on Amy’s sultry style as his own muse.

"Amy Winehouse was a true style icon, what she stands for above all, is uniqueness. Both in music and the way she dressed, she mixed a great many influences to create her style" Gaultier was quoted by reporters backstage at the show.

The signature beehive and bold eyeliner causing huge controversy.

Known best for her tarty fifties taste in fashion, often referencing ‘The Ronettes’,  Amy was once quoted “The more insecure I feel, the bigger my beehive gets”. These insecurities definitely did not reflect in her dress sense, dressed up or dressed down Amy’s outfit choice would always give us something to talk about. Whether it be the towering heels or battered ballet pumps, the lowcut tops or ever shrinking hemline, Amy was always a constant source of inspiration.

Interpretation of Amy's infamous court case suit?

Bride or mourner? The audience were left confused with Gaultier's accessory choice.

Bad tase of late back to black star?

Though the collection has the highest amount of internet hits you can be assured the attention has been for all the wrong reasons,  receiving bad critique after bad critique from numerous tabloids it has also personally been slammed by Amy’s enraged father, Mitch Winehouse. Calling upon the collection as bad taste for glamorizing Amy’s troubled lifestyle which eventually played huge part in her early death. In particular the family are disgusted at the fact several of the models paraded down the catwalk in veils, were they mourners? Were they brides? The family are in no mindset to care for debate as they themselves are struggling with the stars death, especially as this marks the late stars 6 month anniversary.
